Fight tooth decay in six simple steps!

Filed under: Uncategorized — tntadmin @ 10:02 pm

Want to keep away cavities and infection? Of course you do! Your Plantation dentist has six tips to help you prevent tooth decay and enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile for life. Keep reading to learn how you can dramatically improve your oral health with just a few small but impactful changes to your routine!

6 steps for tooth decay prevention

Keep these tips in mind for brighter, healthier teeth this year, and for many more to come.

#1: Brushing

It’s no surprise that toothbrushing comes at the top of the list — but what may be a surprise is how many adults skip this simple step. If you’re not brushing for two minutes, twice a day, you’re exposing your mouth to a host of potential problems, including tooth decay and gum disease. There’s really never a good excuse to skip brushing, so just don’t do it.

#2: Flossing

As your dentists in Plantation, we see the effects of not flossing every day. Too many adults either believe it’s an optional step, or they just can’t develop the flossing habit. Don’t be one of them! Flossing is the only way to remove the bacteria and plaque your toothbrush leaves behind. Make it a habit by placing the pack in a place you’re sure to see it each evening, like beside your toothbrush or on your nightstand.

#3: Stop smoking

As if you needed another reason to kick the habit, tobacco use (of any kind) is a major contributor to tooth decay and gum disease.

#4: Hydrate with water

Because saliva washes away the bacteria and acids that cause decay and infection, a hydrated mouth is also a healthy mouth. Sipping water throughout the day helps keep saliva flowing, and encourages fresher breath and cleaner teeth, too.

#5: Eat a balanced diet

You already know eating well is good for your body, but you probably don’t consider the effect it has on your oral health. To promote strong teeth and healthy gums, make sure you’re getting a variety of nutrients by selecting fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean proteins.

#6: Visit your dentist every six months

There’s a reason we send you reminders to come see us every six months. When you stay on top of your regular checkups and cleanings, you’re giving a professional the chance to check for early warning signs of serious issues — allowing us to act fast for successful treatment.
